Habitat for Humanity of the San Gabriel Valley is taking action to revitalize El Sereno, with plans to purchase and renovate 16–20 former Caltrans homes. These properties, some left vacant since the early 1960s, will be transformed into safe, dignified housing for first-time buyers. By capping mortgage payments at 30% of income, Habitat ensures these homes remain truly affordable for families earning up to 80% of the area’s median income.

When Habitat for Humanity asked for help, our HVAC program didn’t hesitate. Instructors Orlando and Leo led a group of ten students to El Sereno, where they put their skills to work installing brand-new mini split HVAC systems in homes that hadn’t been lived in for decades. This wasn’t just a training exercise. Students worked side by side with electricians, carpenters, and other tradespeople, gaining real-world experience while contributing to something bigger than themselves. Capstone College provided the contractor licenses, equipment, and support needed to get the job done. But the students brought the heart. Every system they mounted and every line they ran brought these homes one step closer to becoming warm, welcoming places to live.

We are incredibly proud of our students and instructors for living out Capstone College’s values and making a real impact. As the El Sereno homes are transformed from boarded-up shells into vibrant residences, our partnership with Habitat for Humanity shows that education and community service go hand in hand. We look forward to celebrating with the families who will soon call these houses home and to sharing more stories of how Capstone College is building futures beyond the classroom. Together, we build.
